LEG4DEV partners with Ethiopian universities on nine legume-scaling research projects

2025

The LEG4DEV project has partnered with Ethiopian universities and the International Livestock Research Institute to provide financial and scientific support to nine legume-scaling research projects conducted by MSc and PhD researchers based in Ethiopia. The postgraduate researchers and their academic supervisors are from Haramaya University, Jimma University and Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia.

A critical analysis of soil (and water) conservation practices in the Ethiopian Highlands: Implications for future research and modeling

2024

A detailed review of 120 publications on soil erosion in the Ethiopian Highlands is made to evaluate the effectiveness of soil and water conservation practices to identify possible research gaps. With few exceptions, experiments assessing soil and water conservation practices (SWCPs) are carried out on less than 1 km2 and in less than five years. These experiments show that SWCP reduces soil loss.

Coupled Impacts of Soil Acidification and Climate Change on Future Crop Suitability in Ethiopia

2024

We investigated the combined effect of soil acidity and climate factors in determining the potential of four key food crops (teff, maize, barley and common wheat) in Ethiopia under changing climate conditions. We conclude that by 2050, the climate in Ethiopia is projected to undergo shifts characterized by increases in both rainfall and temperatures. The interaction between these climatic changes and shifting soil pH is anticipated to impact crop suitability.

Evaluation of ERA5 and CHIRPS rainfall estimates against observations across Ethiopia

2024

This study investigates differences in the performance of CHIRPS and ERA5 across Ethiopia’s diverse topographical and climatic landscape. CHIRPS robust performance in high-altitude areas, particularly for daily rainfall prediction, highlights its potential as a more reliable tool for rainfall estimation in similar settings.

Cascading Climate Resilience: A Training of Trainers Approach to Integrate Climate Risk Management in Ethiopia’s Agricultural Extension

2024

Climate risk management for agricultural extension, GIZ, AICCRA, and ten public universities have collaborated to cascade training from university staff to farmers and end-users using a Training of Trainers (ToT) approach.

LEG4DEV publishes research on long-term soil moisture trends in Ethiopia

2024

LEG4DEV Project Researcher Tamirat B. Jimma from the International Livestock Research Institute recently conducted a study examining the potential for soil moisture to enable more productive, resilient and climate smart agriculture in Ethiopia – Quantifying Residual Soil Moisture through Empirical Orthogonal Functions Analysis to Support Legume-Based Cropping Systems.

EU-funded LEG4DEV project hosts multi-stakeholder research prioritisation workshop on scaling legumes for development outcomes in Ethiopia

2024

This news piece shares highlights from the LEG4DEV project workshop in Adama, Oromia region, Ethiopia. The workshop brought together key partners and stakeholders from multiple sectors involved in scaling legumes in Ethiopia. Representatives from government, private sector, NGOs, farmers organisations, civil society and universities attended the workshop.

Research and innovation priorities
for enabling legume scaling for
development outcomes in Ethiopia

2023

This report shares findings from the LEG4DEV Multistakeholder Workshop in Ethiopia, which engaged legume-based agricultural and food systems in Ethiopia to work together to identify and prioritise
research priorities for enabling scaling of legumes for development outcomes in Ethiopia.
